Modern trucks are run by computers. The engine, the transmission, and the exhaust aftertreatment each have a control unit with software and calibration data inside. Vehicle programming means reading, diagnosing, updating, and sometimes recalibrating that software.
This section focuses on trucks: diesel pickups like the Cummins-powered Ram, the Duramax GM trucks, and the Power Stroke Ford Super Duty, plus heavy-duty and commercial engines. It explains ECU tuning, diagnostics, and remapping at a conceptual level, looks at the professional tools, and spends real time on the law.
Emissions tampering is illegal. In the US, the Clean Air Act and EPA anti-tampering rules prohibit removing, disabling, or defeating emissions controls on road vehicles, including diesel particulate filters (DPF), exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), and SCR/DEF systems, and prohibit selling or installing "delete" tunes and defeat devices. States such as California (CARB) add their own rules, and the EU has similar laws. This site does not give instructions for deletes, for defeating emissions systems, or for bypassing immobilizers. See Safety and legal notes.
